Using ThetaViz
Saved Strategies and Mark-to-Market P/L
Updated May 28, 2026 · Published May 24, 2026
Save builder setups and track modeled profit and loss with current quotes.
Signed-in ThetaViz users can save strategies from the payoff builder and review them on the Saved strategies page. Each saved entry stores your legs and shows mark-to-market P/L using current quotes and the same pricing models as the builder.
This feature is for tracking ideas and paper-style learning. It is not a brokerage ledger.
Save a strategy
- Build a position in
/build/{strategy}with symbol, strikes, and quantities set. - Use Save (or the save control in the builder header when available).
- Name the setup if prompted so you can find it later.
The app stores leg definitions tied to your account. Reopening a saved item reloads those legs into the builder context.
Mark-to-market P/L explained
Mark-to-market means valuing the position at today’s prices instead of waiting for expiry.
| Concept | Meaning in ThetaViz |
|---|---|
| Entry / cost basis | What you modeled as paid or collected when you saved |
| Current value | Model using live or recent option quotes |
| P/L | Difference between current value and entry, per the app’s formulas |
Figures update when quotes refresh. They can differ from your broker because of:
- Different quote timestamps or mark rules
- Fees, commissions, and rebates not modeled
- Assignments, corporate actions, or adjusted contracts
- Partial fills on multi-leg orders
Always label broker P/L as authoritative for taxes and account equity.
Use cases
Paper tracking. Model a trade on Monday, save it, and check Wednesday whether delta and theta moved as you expected.
Adjustment comparisons. Duplicate a saved iron condor, widen wings in the builder, save as a second version, and compare modeled risk.
Study journal. Pair saved entries with notes on why you chose strikes. Export or copy builder URLs from related guides in Using the payoff builder.
Saved strategies page
The list view typically shows symbol, strategy type, entry date, and current modeled P/L. Open an item to jump back into analysis or edit legs.
Sorting and filtering help when you run many paper positions. Archive or delete setups you no longer need so the list stays readable.
Privacy and data
Saved legs are tied to your ThetaViz account under our privacy policy. Do not treat saved strategies as shared trade recommendations unless you explicitly send a builder link to someone else.
We do not execute trades from saved strategies. Order entry always happens at your broker.
Not broker P/L
| ThetaViz saved P/L | Broker account |
|---|---|
| Educational model | Legal record of fills |
| May use mid or model marks | Uses execution prices |
| Ignores wash sales, lots | Tracks tax lots |
For tax reporting concepts, see Reporting options on your tax return (not tax advice).
Tips
- Re-save after major leg changes so the entry basis matches your new thesis.
- For illiquid options, expect noisy P/L when the bid-ask is wide.
- Combine with chart modes in Greeks in the builder when reviewing open paper trades.
Worked example: paper iron condor week one
Monday: save iron condor on SPY, $2.00 credit modeled.
Wednesday: modeled P/L +$60 as spot stays mid-range and IV dips.
Friday: spot pierces short call wing; modeled P/L −$180.
You learned range risk without a broker fill. Compare to what your broker would have shown on a real credit spread.
Worked example: duplicate and adjust
Save version A with $5 wide wings. Duplicate thesis, widen to $10 wings in builder, save as B. Side-by-side list shows which paper trade had smaller max loss on the chart.
Entry basis drift
If you add a hedge leg but forget to re-save, mark-to-market compares old basis to new risk. Re-save or delete stale entries so P/L matches your story.
Sharing builder links
Saved strategies complement shareable URLs from the builder. Links show structure; saved entries track time series P/L for your account only.
Limits of modeled P/L
Corporate actions, splits, and halts can make saved legs stale. Delete or update saves after symbol changes.
Using saves in a study routine
Weekly review: sort by largest modeled loss, open builder, ask what you would do differently. Pattern recognition beats checking P/L only on winners.
